Google Apps with ADFS Password Change Web App.

Internet, Windows | Posted by Jonathan
May 06 2011

So I’ve been quiet now for a bit, but here is the story on what I’ve been working on lately. Recently I’ve been helping do a migration from Exchange to Google Apps using ADFS 2.0 as the SSO. Everything in regards to authentication is working, but to simply user support and provide the end user the ability to change their own “built in google apps user” without envolving IT or purchasing some expensive product… I have created my own.

It will authenticate the user against ADFS and then using the Google API will allow that user to change their Google Apps User password to one they define. This allows them to set/reset their password that is used by non web requests such as IMAP, desktop software and mobile phones.

Here is a current screenshot, but no public code release yet.

UPDATE May 13th, 2011:

I have continued work on this project and now at version 0.6.0 it is almost to a completed first render model of the application. New features I have added:

  • History Per User/Viewable by user.
  • PIN Code Creation with detection of missing PIN and forced creation.
  • Streamlined Menu, using DevExpress components.
  • Various performance enhancements and bug fixes.

Coming up next:

  • Implement PIN Code Management.
  • Implement PIN CodeĀ usageĀ in password change routine.
  • Implement PIN Code encryption routines.
  • Implement password complexity logic.
  • Implement PIN Code validation logic.
I’m edging closer and closer to completion and hopefully soon I will be able to move to Dual Password Change URL for Google Apps SSO. The goal of that project is to provide a Password Ā Change URL that you can use to allow the user to change both their AD password and the Google Apps user password at the same time.

Update June 3rd, 2011:

After another few weeks of being away, getting married and such, I’m back and have an update on the progress.
As above I had listed a few items coming up next, well here is what is now in this release:
  • Implement PIN Code Management.
  • Implement PIN CodeĀ usageĀ in password change routine.
  • Implement PIN Code encryption routines.
  • Implement password complexity logic.
  • Implement PIN Code validation logic.
That’s right, that whole list is in now. The password complexity logic is based on complexity requirements from Google to try to prevent any account from being hit by the Captcha response system.
Up next on my plate of goodness:
  • Implement Management Application For Site. This will be a standalone application that ties into the databaseĀ back-end.
  • Implement theming on the site that is nicer than what currently is in use.
  • Implement client side in page validation before delivery to server for validation.
  • Implement fullĀ sign-outĀ and cleanup of ADFS cookies from management site.

Fresh Books… fresh take on consulting billing?

Internet | Posted by Jonathan
Jun 20 2010

So I have signed up for the free subscription to Fresh Books, a site for in the cloud billing and time tracking.

What I have seen so far has impressed me. The site is very clean, well organized, and highly intuitive. The billing/invoicing functions are down right awesome, and the fact that the client can sign in and view their outstanding invoices and make payments is just excellent!

I would highly suggest if you are in the market for a site to do invoicing, time tracking, support cases, or more… to give Fresh Books a try!

B&N nook Shipments delayed… again… maybe?

Uncategorized | Posted by Jonathan
Nov 30 2009

So today, B&N was to start shipping the nook’s to all those who had preordered early enough for a November 30th ship date. Unfortunately, they have missed that mark, or at least appear to have missed it. As an email suggests, the ship date is delayed for an unknown reason. But it does not actually say it is delayed. It’s like they know it will cause a back lash of complaints, and didn’t want to speak those words!

Capture

They did offer us a $10 gift card and free upgrade to overnight shipping, which as a member you already got expedited air service. But these seem like a slap in the face. They missed the mark, won’t admit or explain why, and send us this email that hints at a delay without saying it is delayed.

But none the less, I still sit with my brochure and camera ready to take pictures of it. Assuming it gets here before I leave on my next work trip.

Time to go complete your Dell Windows 7 Free Upgrade order! Since Windows 7 has officially launched, the Dell upgrade site is most likely inundated with requests. I managed to complete my order and receive a confirmation email of the order. But it took a good 15 minutes to make it through the four page site.

So to add to the misery of Dell, EVERYONE needs to go order their Windows 7 kit. If you registered your system that came with a free upgrade, now is the time, go go go!

Barnes and Noble nook Announced!

Internet | Posted by Jonathan
Oct 21 2009

nook_logo_brandingBarnes and Noble have announced their entry into the digital reader market with the nook.

This device is also the first to be released using Google’s Android as the OS. Which also brings to question how long it will take for someone to modify the unit. Or will someone even need to? From the sounds of it, B&N seems a little open to the idea of Android Apps being available for use. Regardless however, this unit shows great potential and serious threat to the Kindle. The specs for the unit are impressive, as well as a few key notes. One is that the unit allows you to lend your books to other users of the software or devices. Two, you can sync between the nook or any other device running the B&N eReader. And finally, the nook can tap into the Google Books project, for access to over 500,000 free books and other publications.

Now if you were sitting around yesterday for the revealing of this unnook_front viewit, you may have noticed that it was available for preorder online before they announced it. Probably a mistake, but that didn’t stop me from placing my preorder and then watching the site get pulled until they were ready ready.

Head on over and view the system specs, and place your preorder if you feel so inclined. Or if you wish to wait for some of the other devices coming, you can do that as well.

Google Apps Mobile Sync iPhone Supports Email!

Internet | Posted by Jonathan
Oct 21 2009

mobile_logo[1]

I didn’t even notice this one happen, and only caught it because I was floating around the Google Apps Administration site. Apparently Google has updated the mobile sync to support not only calendar and contacts as it has been for a while, but also email. This was a big hurdle for a while as you would need one sync setup using exchange active sync, and another IMAP setup for your email. The email would not always come to your phone on time and you would have to manually update it.

Well that is no longer the case, as you can now run all services through the one sync setup. Another note is they have enabled you to modify your calendar sync, follow these directions from your iPhone.

Google Sync allows you to choose up to 25 Calendars with the Calendar app on your iPhone (on iPhone OS 3.0)

To select which calendars to sync to your iPhone, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Safari browser on your phone and go to http://m.google.com/sync.
  2. Sign in with your account and select your phone from the list of devices you’ve set up for Google Sync.
  3. Bookmark this page so you can return to it easily.

Google Apps alternate instructions:

  1. Open the Safari browser on your phone and go to http://m.google.com
  2. Click on Google Apps user? at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Enter your domain name (e.g., YourDomain.com).
  4. Click the Sync icon in your domain area (this section has a green background).
  5. Sign in if required.
  6. Select your device to configure Calendars.
